16mo (16.5 cm), pp. [2], [iv], 322. Contemporary full vellum, colorfully painted in floral designs and titling, with raised rectangle framing an image of Venice. Decorative endpapers. Top edge gilt. Frontispiece tipped in. Bookplate of Thomas Jefferson Murray on inside front board. Overall soiling to boards with fading and scuffing. Raised frame has portions broken away. Marks from where clasps or ties once were attached. Dampstaining to edges of last few pages. First published in three volumes in 1851 and 1853, The Stones of Venice "had an immediate effect on Victorian architects, who began to introduce Romanesque forms and Venetian and Veronese colour and sculptural features into their designs."
