Frontispieces with captioned tissue guards and numerous plates of photogravure illustrations. Handmade paper, each page featuring brown marginal illustrations from drawings by William Martin Johnson. Includes reproduction of the letter of praise from Garfield to Wallace dated 19 April 1881. Volume one with publisher's note tipped in. Moderate edge wear, scuffing and soiling. (Russo & Sullivan.
