First edition, thus. Octavo (20 cm). Green cloth, leather spine labels with gilt text. Top edge gilt, others deckle. Photogravure frontispieces with captioned tissue guards and several engraved plates of illustrations. Title page of volume 1 was designed by Tiffany & Co. and engraved by W. H. W. Bicknell, and features an SLC monogram surrounded by scenes from Mark Twain's life including a boat, stagecoach, train and his home in Hartford, Connecticut. The lower left corner features a cabin depicting his humble birthplace at Florida, Missouri. Bookplate of Thomas Jefferson Murray on inside front boards. Edgewear and rubbing to boards, several volumes are cracked at the front hinge. A near-complete set (missing are volumes 9, 12 and 14) of the 1907 Harper & Brothers version, which expanded the set from 23 to 25 volumes. The Hillcrest edition, named for the Clemens home in Tarrytown, New York, was originally published by the American Publishing Company in 1903. It features the statement in each volume: "This is the authorized Uniform Edition of all my books. --Mark Twain." (Schmidt. "A History of and Guide to Uniform Editions of Mark Twain's Works").
