12mo ( 18.5 cm), pp. 250, vi. Publisher's binding in maroon cloth with gilt titling, decorative endpapers. Includes publisher's advertisements in rear, frontispiece, black and white illustrations throughout, and folding map in rear pocket, titled "Map of the Yellowstone National Park, Compiled from Different Official Explorations and Our Personal Survey, 1882." Spine is worn at both ends, boards have light soiling and wear. Former owner affixed a wax seal to the spine,and tipped-in two wildlife-themed plates to rear pastedown and endpaper. Front pastedown is damaged from the removal of a bookplate. Binding is sound. Folding map has light toning, and a tear along one fold spanning nearly the length of the map. Wingate, one of the founders of the National Rifle Association, travelled to the park with his family in the summer of 1885, and the resulting journal functioned as a guidebook for early travelers to the park. Wingate's subject matter ranges from how to get to Yellowstone, to how to outfit one's expedition; from descriptions of wildlife and flora to altitudes, travel distances and time tables; from a history of indigenous inhabitation, to descriptions of park landmarks and features.
