"Although white-on-black wood-engraving had been used in the late seventeenth century for initial letters in books, its history really begins with Thomas Bewick of Newcastle (1753-1828), who perfected it in charming, delicately carved vignettes and illustrations.... With the works of his followers, wood-engraving was well on the way to being the most important mode of book and periodical illustration in the nineteenth century." (Hults, Linda C. The Print in the Western World, p. 560)
