Third printing. Octavo (21.5 cm), pp.xiv, 217. The "Blue Book" edition: Blue cloth with silver titling, blue dust jacket with mountain stream on front, author photo on back. Presentation copy dated and signed by Maclean on front free endpaper to David J. Maclay, of the Bitterroot Valley ranching family: "Missoula/ April 6, 1977/ To David Maclay,/ of one of Montana's greatest families/ Norman Maclean." Signed underneath by Maclay. Includes three semi-autobiographical novellas (the title story, "Logging and Pimping and 'Your Pal, Jim,'" and "USFS 1919: The Ranger, The Cook and a Hole in the Sky.") Woodcuts by Robert Williams--based on photos provided by Maclean--scattered throughout. Jacket is price-clipped, has light edge wear, a touch of sunning, and a small stain on the underside at spine; spine slightly cocked. The movie based on the title novella inspired a land-rush in Montana, as fly-fishing enthusiasts bought vacation homes (and drove up real estate prices, to the dismay of locals). Maclay's grandfather and namesake, David R. Maclay, established a cattle ranch in the early 1880s in the foothills of the Bitterroot Mountains, south of Missoula where Maclean made his home. (Thacher 333). Dust jacket present.
