Last Place is a photo book of Nichols' work on the expedition, with an introduction by science writer David Quammen who covered the megatransect for National Geographic magazine. Fay's journals are illustrated by Nichols' black and white photography. These two volumes are housed in an attractive, heavy box with photo illustrations on the lid. One small scratch on box's lid, else fine.The megatransect was a 455-day, 2,000-mile expedition from 1999-2000, in which Fay and his team crossed the Congo Basin on foot in order to conduct an ecological survey of the region. National Geographic sponsored the undertaking and gave it substantial coverage in its magazine. First Edition.
