Octavo (23 cm), pp. xvi, 2- 460, plus advertisements. First US edition from the ninth London edition, with material added on North American hunting and game animals. Original red cloth binding with gilt lettering, design of hunting dogs stamped on upper board. Evidence of exposure to moisture, as well as foxing, discolored leaves. Boards are well-worn and possibly singed at tail of spine. Former owner's stamp on front pastedown. In "A Sportsman's Library," Stephen Bodio writes that "'Instructions' is one of the prime examples of 'lyrical shoptalk' in sporting literature.
