Octavo (23.5 cm), pp. [xx], 362. Signed, inscribed and dated by author on half title page: "With high and warm regard the humble author inscribeth his name to Helen and Lucian Kirtland. April 5, 1925." Green boards with gilt titling, pictorial endpapers, deckle edge. Includes black and white photographic frontispiece: Guano birds on Lobos de Tierra; illustrated throughout with more than 50 of the author's photographs. Jacket has substantial wear, with many chips and tears, as well as foxing that has bled through marking the lower board. Newspaper article (The Bronxville Review) laid in, regarding a talk Murphy gave about his travels, mentions inscribee Lucian Kirtland, who chaired the meeting at which Murphy spoke. A conservationist, authority on sea birds and assistant director at the American Museum of Natural History, Murphy wrote this book based on his 1919-1920 scientific expedition to the west coast of Peru. It was called "one of the most important contributions to the natural history of South America," in a review by Witmer Stone, editor of "The Auk: Ornithological Advances." Dust jacket present.
