Dull Knife: A Joe Picket Story, Box, C.J.
8 Box, C.J. Dull Knife: A Joe Picket Story
Clarkston, MI and Mission Viejo, CA A.S.A.P. 2005 189201131X / 9781892011312 Hardcover Fine
Limited edition (#144/200), signed by author, introduction author Ken Bruen, and artist Phil Parks on colophon page. Octavo (22.5 cm), pp. 34. Pictorial upper board, black and white illustrations tipped in throughout. No jacket as issued. Frontispiece photo of author. Box says the inspiration for this story came from an ice-fishing trip he took with his father when he was a kid. A faint glow under the ice at night turned out to be the "dying headlights of a completely submerged car that had crashed through the surface at night and sunk to the bottom. There were no fatalities, and we never learned how the car got there. Joe Pickett, of course, doggedly investigates this eerie accident in this story." The first of three of ASAP's Box limited editions. According to Firsts magazine, "Small press publisher Jim Seels met C.J. Box at the 2003 Bouchercon, where Jim won a silent auction. The prize was having a character named for him in Box’s next book. Jim gave the honor to his wife, Mary—and there she is, in Out of Range. This led to Seels’ series of Box limited editions." This previously-unpublished short story features Box's long-suffering game warden.

This stand-alone story is follows Lakota performers from Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show as they navigate the streets and parties and politics of Paris, France. Box wrote that it "is easily one of the most exuberantly twisted and cynical stories I’ve ever written." According to Firsts magazine, "Small press publisher Jim Seels met C.J. Box at the 2003 Bouchercon, where Jim won a silent auction. The prize was having a character named for him in Box’s next book. Jim gave the honor to his wife, Mary—and there she is, in Out of Range. Pictorial upper board, color illustrations tipped in throughout. No jacket as issued. Frontispiece photo of author with horse. Box says he wrote the piece to see if Joe Pickett's brooding, ex-military sidekick, Nate Romanowski, could carry a story on his own. According to Firsts magazine, "Small press publisher Jim Seels met C.J. Box at the 2003 Bouchercon, where Jim won a silent auction. The prize was having a character named for him in Box’s next book.
